What Is First-Party Data in Advertising?
First-party data is information you collect directly from your own audience, through channels you own, and with their consent. This could be your website, your app, your CRM, your checkout, or your email list. Nobody outside your organization collected it or sold it to you, and the relationship that produced it is entirely yours.
When it comes to advertising, first-party data only works once a platform can match it to a real user. An email sitting in your CRM does nothing, but that same email, hashed and uploaded to Meta or Google, joins the customer pool that you can now target, exclude, or build a lookalike from. This only works for the share of records your platform recognizes, called the match rate, and it governs everything downstream.

First-Party vs Second-Party vs Third-Party Data
All the different data types are separated by one main question: who collected it, and from whom. In short, you collect first-party data from your own audience, second-party data is somebody else’s first-party data (shared by agreement), and third-party data is aggregated by a company with no relationship to the people in it.

Why First-Party Data Matters as Cookies Disappear
The short answer to why first party data is important now more than ever is that every targeting and measurement decision you make depends on recognizing the same person at least twice, for instance, the visitor who browsed your website on Monday, and the buyer who made a purchase on Friday. That recognition used to come free from the browser, but for a growing share of your audience it no longer does.
What actually happened to third-party cookies
They disappeared from Safari, Firefox, and Brave, but still work in Chrome and Edge.
Safari has blocked all cross-site cookies by default since WebKit shipped full third-party cookie blocking on 24 March 2020, and its Intelligent Tracking Prevention also caps client-side cookie expiry at seven days, so even your own first-party cookies decay there if JavaScript writes them.
Firefox partitions cookies through Total Cookie Protection, on by default since 2022, and Brave blocks tracking cookies outright. Chrome and Edge are the only outliers among the big players. Chrome only blocks third-party cookies when a user is in Incognito mode or changes the setting manually, while Edge blocks trackers from unvisited sites.
On 22 April 2025, after five years of planning a deprecation, Google announced it had “made the decision to maintain our current approach to offering users third-party cookie choice in Chrome, and will not be rolling out a new standalone prompt for third-party cookies.” Six months later, on 17 October 2025, it retired ten Privacy Sandbox technologies, including Topics, Protected Audience, and the Attribution Reporting API, based on their low levels of adoption.
StatCounter’s 2026 figures show that Safari and Firefox alone still carry roughly a fifth of worldwide browser traffic, where third-party cookies are already blocked. And on iOS, App Tracking Transparency continues to require an explicit opt-in before an app can access the IDFA, and most users decline.

Why that made first-party data even more important
Third-party cookies used to recognize the same person across different websites automatically. So if someone clicked your ad, browsed, left, and came back a week later, your platform still knew it was the same person and could credit the sale to the right ad. Now, the same job falls to you: collecting the identifiers yourself, storing them with consent, and sending them to the platform.
Meta and Google algorithms learn from the conversions you report, and they decide who to show your ads to based on which clicks turned into sales, which is how targeted advertising works. This way, if a share of those sales never gets reported, the system is optimizing against an incomplete picture and keeps spending on audiences that look better in the data than they really are.
As a result, attribution gets less reliable, retargeting pools shrink because fewer return visitors can be recognized, campaigns take longer to leave the learning phase on thinner conversion data, and CPA rises as budget goes to the wrong people. Uploading a customer list tells the platform who your buyers already are, and sending the conversion from your own server tells it which click produced a sale, even when the browser blocked the pixel.
Types of First-Party Data You Can Collect
The most common first party data examples are split into six main categories, across two main jobs:
- Identifiers, which enable matching → email addresses are the most valuable field you own and the one every platform matches on; phone numbers are often the better key in mobile-first markets; additional context like postal address and name are weak on their own but can be useful as supporting fields.
- Behavioral data, which enables segmentation → purchase history (order value, frequency, category, recency), on-site and in-app behavior, and any other CRM records such as deal stage, account tier, and churn risk.
Without an identifier, Meta and Google have nothing to match against, so the record never becomes an audience your first party data ads can reach. Without behavioral data, the audience exists, but everyone in it looks identical, which leaves you targeting the whole list or excluding the whole list, with nothing in between.

How to Collect First-Party Data
Any first party data marketing strategy starts with collection, and in advertising that’s a design problem before it is a technical one. People hand over data when they get something for it, and the exchange has to be obvious at the moment you ask:
- Website and app behavior is captured passively by your analytics and tag setup. It needs a consent banner that works and a tagging plan that fires on the events you care about for your ad strategy.
- Email signups are the best collection point you could own, be it newsletter forms, gated resources, back-in-stock alerts, or waitlists. The offer itself has a great impact on the volume of signups. “Subscribe to our newsletter” converts much worse than “get 10% off your first order”.
- Loyalty programs and surveys work because the value exchange is explicit. Loyalty schemes trade a discount for identity and purchase history. Quizzes and preference centers produce additional first-party data at lower volume and much higher intent.

How to Use First-Party Data in Advertising
There are three main activation methods that cover almost everything you’ll do in making the most of your first-party data in ad campaigns — matched audiences, lookalikes built from them, and server-side event tracking that keeps the whole system fed. Custom Audiences on Meta, Google, and TikTok
A Custom Audience is the starting point for most 1st party data advertising — a list of your own customers, matched against a platform’s user base so you can target or exclude them. The process is the same across the board:
- Export the list with every identifier you hold.
- Hash it, or let the platform’s upload tool hash it for you.
- Upload the file or connect your CRM directly.
- Wait for matching (usually hours, not minutes).
- Build segments from what matched, and use them as seeds.
Google Ads Help states that Customer Match “lets you use your online and offline data to reach and re-engage with your customers across Search, the Shopping tab, Gmail, YouTube, and Display.” A segment needs at least 100 members added or updated in the last 540 days, and 540 days is also the maximum membership duration, so keep in mind that records age out. Also, users must be signed in to their Google account for the matching to happen at all.
Google’s terminology changed as well, causing confusion for anyone working with their older documentation. Audience types are now audience segments, remarketing is now your data, and Google itself recommends the Data Manager API over the Google Ads API for new implementations.
Don’t expect a 100% match rate either. For a clean, recent email list, a 50-70% match is quite common, while old records, a single identifier, and simple typos will all pull it down. Matched pools are also what retargeting in Google Ads runs on.
Lookalike and similar audiences
A lookalike audience takes a seed list you supply and finds users who resemble it. Of course, the output is only ever as good as the seed, and this is where many accounts leave money on the table.
A seed of 500 customers in your top LTV decile will beat a seed of 50,000 “everyone who ever bought” almost every time, because the second list has no distinct signal in it. It describes your average customer, and in most cases, your average customer isn’t who you want to primarily target. Segment before you build, then feed those audiences into Smart Bidding, which uses the conversion signal to price each auction.
Server-side tracking: Conversions API and Enhanced conversions
Server-side tracking sends conversion events from your server instead of from the user’s browser, so they survive blocked cookies, ad blockers, and browser restrictions.

- Collecting without consent infrastructure: Data gathered without a clear legal basis is data you can’t upload. Under GDPR that means documented consent for advertising use specifically, not a buried line in a privacy policy. Volume you can’t activate is worse than none, because it feels like an asset.
